Companies such as Shopify, Meta, and Amazon are extending support to their sellers by enabling the creation of generative product images and advertisements. Presently, the technology excels in generating specific types of product photos.
However, a notable challenge remains in presenting an entire product collection in a high-quality manner. This advancement could prove immensely convenient for sellers capable of removing product backgrounds and regenerating a variety of backgrounds for their products effortlessly. This eliminates the need for a creative professional or hiring a product photographer for diverse background shoots.
My perspective is that while this technology offers convenience and potential benefits for some Shopify, Amazon, and Meta sellers, it may not suffice for premium brands seeking uniqueness. The generative AI models currently tend to produce images that might appear somewhat generic due to the lack of finely tuned, brand-specific tools that grasp the subtleties of product photography and branding nuances.
In essence, this technology might serve specific sellers and brands, particularly those with sufficient budgets to hire creative professionals or photographers, enabling quick turnaround times and reduced marketing material costs.
However, the outcomes might appear more generic and may not stand out among brands that invest more thought, effort, time, and resources into their creative processes. Therefore, brands investing in product photography or employing their frameworks for AI-driven product photography are likely to distinguish themselves from those relying solely on the native AI models of Shopify, Meta, and Amazon for ad and product image generation in the short term.
Until these tech giants can offer finely tuned models tailored to individual brands—a process requiring significant computing power and potentially incurring high costs—customized solutions like hiring product photographers or creatives familiar with AI tools will prevail over generic AI models.
As creatives in 2024, it’s important to understand and leverage these AI systems to our advantage, recognizing their capabilities and limitations within our creative processes. Educating ourselves on the forefront of generative AI and integrating these tools into our existing workflows will position us advantageously against competitors who lack this capability.
